Marcus felt Kyna regard him with a mixture of desire and cautious anticipation. He was conscious of drowning in the sea green depths of her eyes. He fought the silent Siren’s call and closed his eyes, holding her in his arms wordlessly for a long moment.
She stirred and he opened his eyes. Again without volition, his hand reached for her cheek and stroked it, then swept a red-gold curl behind her ear. A thumb brushed the edge of her lips, soft and full, that parted and the warmth of her breath sent a charge along his nerve endings.
Something was happening to him that he didn’t intend, didn’t even think was possible. He gritted his teeth against it, this… this tenderness he could feel spear through his heart.
He had spent the past ten years convinced that particular organ was dead – poisoned by Agrippina and her father’s treachery. The fact it lived and apparently still beat in his chest was damned inconvenient.
Especially now.
The words of Aurelius came back to him as audible as if the man were standing speaking to them now.
“You won’t find the boys in Rome any longer.”
“Why? Where are they?”
“They’re being moved south.”
“South where?”
“Naples. Baiae or Capri, I think. They plan to make their capital there. And Marcus… there is something you should know. Gnaius Martialis Plinius was in the city recently.”
At the mention of the man’s name, a visceral rage had filled him. In memory, it was worse because he knew the words that came next.
“He plans to initiate your son into the cult of Elagabalus.”
Marcus was conscious his renewed fury was visible because Kyna pulled away from his arms and backed several paces away, slowly, as one might cautiously skirt a wild, unbroken horse.
“Can you ride?” he asked her, reining in his anger, although he could not hide the gruffness in his voice.
Kyna nodded mutely, then cleared her throat and answered in the affirmative.
“Then be ready at first light. We travel to Antium.”
Marcus was glad she asked no questions. He wasn’t sure he had patience enough to answer them now. Nor the time. Nacre hovered by the door discreetly attracting his attention.
